DENGUE ALERT & RESPONSE SYSTEM

Under the directions of the Federal Secretary Health Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination (M/o NHSR&C) Islamabad, Director Emergency Dr. Nadia and Ms. Laraib (M/o NHSR&C), along with, Entomologists Mr. Izaz Khan and Dengue Incharge Mr. Malik Qasim Sujra visited RHC Barakahu met with Dr. Inamullah Incharge RHC Barakhu checked lab to boost up dengue prevention and control.They also visited community and conducted dengue awareness session. During the session, the community was educated about essential precautionary measures, including eliminating mosquito breeding sites, maintaining cleanliness, and adopting personal protection practices to stay safe from dengue.The initiative aimed to enhance public awareness and strengthen community engagement in the ongoing efforts against dengue in Barakhahu Islamabad.

Relentless Efforts Against Dengue in Barakahu! 🦟

The Barakahu Dengue Teams remain fully active in the field under the guidance of District Health Officer Islamabad & District Administration Entomologists along with their dedicated surveillance teams, are conducting intensive field monitoring, ensuring strict implementation of Dengue SOPs, and inspecting potential breeding sites across the Barakahu.They continue to encourage, guide & motivate teams, engage with the community, and emphasize mechanical larvae removal and source reduction to break the Aedes mosquito breeding cycle.These officers are monitoring indoor and outdoor teams on a daily basis, conducting performance evaluations in morning assembly, and ensuring timely cases response.Due to their tireless efforts, teamwork, and effective management, Barakahu which had been facing an outbreak since July has shown a remarkable decline, with only 3 cases reported now, Together, we are moving toward a Dengue-Free Islamabad!


 


 

The District Health Office (DHO) Islamabad has been at the forefront of managing and controlling dengue outbreaks within the district. Before 2019, no structured dengue prevention campaigns were conducted. However, recognizing the growing threat of dengue, efforts to control the virus began in earnest. Dedicated projects were initiated to tackle the issue comprehensively, leading to the establishment of specialized teams comprising entomologists and surveillance personnel. Currently, nine entomologists oversee dengue prevention efforts in the federal region. They are supported by a permanent surveillance team of approximately 50 members, with an additional workforce of 300 to 500 people hired seasonally to carry out dengue control activities. These teams play a vital role in implementing control measures and ensuring the effectiveness of interventions across the district. The DHO employs a multifaceted strategy to monitor and control the spread of dengue. A robust surveillance system has been established to track dengue cases, involving data collection from hospitals, clinics, and field teams.

Through active case finding and field surveillance, dengue hotspots and high-risk areas are identified. To control the mosquito population, which is the primary vector for dengue transmission, indoor and outdoor spray campaigns are conducted to eliminate adult mosquitoes. The District Health Office conducts dengue prevention campaigns by raising public awareness through community sessions, distributing educational materials, and promoting the removal of mosquito breeding sites. They coordinate fogging operations in high-risk areas, set up health camps for free dengue testing and treatment, and distribute repellents and mosquito nets. In collaboration with schools and media, the office ensures widespread dissemination of information on dengue prevention, helping to control outbreaks and protect public health. Field staff apply larvicides to stagnant water bodies to prevent mosquito larvae from developing into adults. Public engagement is a critical component, with health teams working closely with communities to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites, such as standing water in containers, pots, or gutters. The scale of the DHO’s efforts is reflected in the execution of 2,532,998 vector control activities, covering every aspect of dengue management.

District Health Office Islamabad’s surveillance and vector control teams are actively monitoring dengue risks across the city and taking immediate action.
Citizens are advised to eliminate stagnant water from their homes and surroundings and strictly follow dengue prevention measures:
🦟 Clean water containers, tanks, flower pots, coolers, and fridge trays daily.
🦟 Wear full-sleeved clothing.
🦟 Use mosquito repellent sprays and lotions.
🦟 Use mosquito nets, especially while sleeping.
🦟 Install screens on windows and doors.
